It was art that attracted politicians, scientists, philosophers and others of social or intellectual distinction to the salons of 18thcentury France. It was art that provided the springboard for lively discourse, inquiry and debate of contemporary topics and philosophy. Whether topical or abstract, it was the setting that provided the catalyst and challenged minds. Like a mental gymnasium, intellectuals wrestled with the questions of the day, leaving with a sense that in some way each had been educated or enlightened. The present desire for intellectual stimulation or enlightenment builds on history and traces its lineage to the dialogue of ancient Greek polemicists, philosophers and statesmen who sought to change the world by first changing minds; to building strong societies through strong intellects; and convey what is beautiful in the world through diverse artistic expressions. In an unceasing desire to be changed, we are unchanging and all that is good about humankind owes the greatest debt to centuries of such pursuits. Our modern environs, particularly our technology, provide spectacular opportunities to expand on the original concept of the French Salon, thus stimulating minds and inspiring change through provocative discourse. Never have so many had access to so much information, ideas, art and people. True to its name, the Web binds us together and allows us to share and to seek with unprecedented reach. Radius will utilize technology and art to attract and harness the energies of modern intellectuals. As a hub for arts oriented non-profit organizations, Radius provides a central meeting place and office space so that these organizations can collectively benefit each other and the community. With its downtown facilities, Radius serves as a showcase of local arts, thus attracting patrons and providing a gathering place for intellectuals, civic leaders, and others who support the arts. As a meeting place for the arts and community, Radius will naturally generate the kinds of lively discourse typical of the original French Salons. With the advent of its coffeehouse, this ideal salon setting will be further enhanced by regular activities including poetry reading, book clubs, audio and visual media, and moderated forums. The definition of a salon within Radius will be flexible so as to include any productive discourse that educates, inspires or enlightens individuals. Formats should be malleable and include carefully designed and moderated settings as well as spontaneous and creative inspirations. Radius will seek to inspire such interaction with art, and promote discussions that address current events or topics; philosophical debates; and other meaningful dialogues. Most importantly, Radius will strive to document the dynamics of such meetings. Summaries and information about salons can be placed on the Radius website and utilized by Internet visitors from around the globe. In the near future, salons can build on one another and be sponsored to address specific topics within the framework of various longer-term goals. With her interests in art, music, astronomy and philosophy, Aline B. Carter (1892-1970) the tradition of the salon was prominent in the public rooms of her San Antonio home. Radius rests in the shade of her historical estate and whether in the period rooms of her home, or the modern industrial spaces now created at Radius, the formula will be the same: intellectuals brought together by a common attraction to art, knowledge, and the desire to make the world a better place.
