We Miss Our First Rochester Apartment
March 9, 2010 5:44 am Travel and LeisureWe miss our first Rochester apartment. We have lived in our home in the North Winton Village in the city for 13 years. Prior to purchasing our home, we lived in a nice two bedroom Rochester apartment on Whalen Street, right near Robach Brewing Company. It was really great being able to call our landlord, who was a handyman, when our Rochester apartment had a problem like the furnace not working, the hot water heater not working, the windows were too drafty in the middle of winter, etcetera. Our Rochester apartment was great.
We did make a good investment when we purchased our home and moved from our Rochester apartment. Since 1998, our home in the city that we purchased for 77,700 has increased in value to 123,500 according to our zestimate from Zillow. But, we are faced with a roof that needs to be replaced and currently some of the electrical outlets in our home are not working and I have no idea what to do about it because I am not handy like the landlord from our Rochester apartment. We have to wait until our next paycheck to call an electrician to fix these problems, and that day is about two weeks away. In addition, while the mortgage is now under 50,000 thanks, in large part, to low interest rates and a 15 year mortgage, we had to take out a pretty sizable home equity line of credit to add a second bathroom, fireplace, finish the attic, fix the garage, and a few other small projects.
In our Rochester apartment we only had one child, so an apartment in Rochester worked well for a small family. Today we have four children who are ages 12, 9, 5, and 3 and a one bedroom Rochester apartment would not have worked well for a family of six. Nonetheless, we miss the opportunity to pick up the phone and call the landlord when something went wrong, particularly something that I do not know how to fix or something that is very expensive.
